Primers
The SIIM/SCAR Primer Series for the digital medical enterprise was established as a companion program to the popular SIIM University presentations, featured at the SIIM Annual Meeting and by an extension program at other industry meetings. The primers cover various aspects of the digital medical enterprise, including electronic reporting, archiving issues, quality assurance, security, and decision support.

SIIM's sixth primer brings an up-to-date view on how to maximize the accuracy and efficiency of diagnostic interpretation (both human and computer) in a logical and methodical fashion. It serves as a starting perspective on the pursuit of evidence-based medicine and the changing role of the radiologist from a passive to active participant in the image interpretation process. Published January 2005.

The fifth primer is an upgrade to the first primer on computer security issues. When the first edition of this volume was prepared, most imaging departments were already aware of the need for vigilance in their use and transmission of digital images and patient data. Since that time a number of factors have coalesced to make security not only a major concern, but a legally regulated aspect of every imaging setting. These settings range from the hospital to every remote site at which a diagnosis is made––even the home office of the radiologist. This book is designed as a starting point for those considering changes and contemplating future efforts in meeting these evolving challenges. Published April 2004.

The fourth primer takes an all-inclusive look at the world of electronic reporting, from a brief history of its development, through advice on how to choose new systems, streamline implementation, integrate with existing systems, and measure success. The topics featured are speech recognition, structured reporting, and the radiology lexicon. Published December 2002.

The third publication in the well-received Primer Series addresses everything from the dispute over exactly what 'quality assurance' means to the step-by-step measures needed to make quality assurance an ongoing and integrated part of the practice setting. The QA primer along with the Archiving and Security primers continues to extend and enhance the impact of the distinguished SIIM University presenters and the topics they address. Published February 2002.

Issues of electronic medical archiving are particularly topical in today's market as more and more imaging providers adopt digital technologies and become filmless. In addition, new regulations like HIPAA call for strict accountability in multiple areas - data integrity, security, and patient confidentiality. This primer was constructed specifically to answer a lot of questions and concerns that have arisen from the changing marketplace, and attempts to provide readers with a broad base of experience within industry, academia, and private practice. Published in May 2001.

Computer security and its application in medical imaging was chosen as the topic for the first book in the new SIIM/SCAR+ University "primer" series since a review of this subject is both timely and critical. New and wide-reaching regulations soon will affect all aspects of computer security in medical practice, at the same time that physicians and patients alike are increasingly concerned about medical data integrity, confidentiality, and dissemination of information over the Internet. Published November 2000.
